Necker honored at Teen national pageant

ORLANDO — Savannah Necker is turning heads and impressing judges at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen Competition.

While competing against 53 outstanding teens from across the nation, the 15-year-old DeWitt native has proven herself among the best.

“Well the first night of competition for Miss America's Outstanding Teen has come and gone and Miss Iowa's Outstanding Teen, Savannah Necker is already a standout,” Miss Clinton County Board President Rachael Vopatek said.

Necker was named a finalist for the Miss America's Outstanding “Teens in Action” award. Out of the 53 contestants only 10 were named finalists as of Tuesday night.

She has been representing Iowa as reigning Miss Iowa's Outstanding Teen and 2011 Miss Clinton County's Outstanding Teen. The national competition continues through Saturday.

“Thousands have gathered to cheer on their favorites from each state including members of Necker's family from DeWitt and several members of the Miss Clinton County Scholarship Program board,” Vopatek said.

The “little sister” competition to Miss America promotes scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America’s teens. Contestants are judged on personal interview, talent, evening wear, lifestyle and fitness in active wear, and on-stage question.

Necker will be performing a baton show twirl routine for the talent portion of the competition. It is a skill that she has been working to perfect since age 4, having preformed in the Disney World parade and receiving medals at the Junior Olympics.

Since taking the Clinton County title, Necker has been busy educating others on the dangers of texting while driving as a platform issue to promote throughout her year of service. This includes speaking at drivers’ education classes and schools, passing out wristbands and urging adults and teens to take the pledge against texting while driving.
