SAVANNA, Ill. — Sarah and Jon Hartman, of Savanna, Ill, said they always knew their son was artistic.
Recently, Trapper Hartman, 10, was featured in CERAKANVAS ceramics magazine.
One day, Trapper’s cousin wanted him to try painting at CDG Ceramics, owned by Gina and Dennis Jordan, in Thomson, Ill. Eventually, it became a habit for him.
Trapper typically dry brushes his pieces and likes to see how they turn out.
“They started out white and then they were painted. I like to see the difference," Trapper, a fifth-grader at West Carroll, said.
Sarah was shocked when Gina Jordan told her that CERAKAVNAS, the official journal of the Ceramic Artist Guild, wanted to feature her son. Representatives from CAAG scour the Facebook pages and websites of various ceramic shops. Sarah said their eyes were caught by a rock Trapper painted.
As part of the article, the magazine surprised Trapper by buying a piece that is a dog holding a duck. He completed the piece in five hours while the magazine documented it.
John never knew his son was so good at painting ceramics until he began bringing the different pieces home.
Trapper typically paints every Saturday and most Thursdays. He is currently working on a wood duck that is life size. In his free time, Trapper also enjoys hunting. His favorite are turkeys because he likes hearing their calls. He plans to paint a large turkey as well.
“I think our shelves are going to be overflowing,” Sarah said.
