CLINTON — Patients and visitors at Mercy Medical Center can expect helpful service from the moment they step in the door, thanks to tens of thousands of hours courtesy of dedicated volunteers.

Mercy Auxiliary presented generous donations toward furthering healthcare in the area at their annual luncheon Tuesday.

“One of our biggest concerns is the experience patients and visitors have at Mercy,” CEO and President Sean Williams said. “We want to make sure they feel loved and cared for. That feeling starts at the info desk or the coffee shop. It’s all the little touches that make a difference.”

This year, about 192 volunteers worked each month and donated a total of 37,950 hours during the past year. Auxiliary donated a total of $71,000 which also includes $3,240.55 that was spent on yarn for making prayer shawls, baby caps and hugging hearts pillows for the benefit of Mercy and surrounding communities.

They received three memorial donations totaling $1,340. These donations were in memory of Darla Burken, Shirley Ketelsen and Carolyn Roling. Clinton Community College received $1,000 to use towards nursing scholarships. Mercy Auxiliary’s Scholarship program received $10,000 and $100,348 went to Mercy Medical Center to use towards furnishings and improvements. Through the donation, Mercy was able to purchase new chairs, flooring and other furniture throughout the facility. CEO and President Sean Williams accepted a check for $56,759 at the event to be used towards replacement dialysis machines.

Countless hours volunteered and money donated goes far beyond new chairs, it is a life-changing experience.

“No matter what role you have at Mercy, you make a difference and you have an impact on patients and visitors each time,” Auxiliary President Margaret Pessman said.

The Mercy Medical Center is always looking for volunteers to work in many different areas of the hospital. For more information, contact Cindy Manning at 244-5899 or email manningc@mercyhealth.com.
