Great Clips opens doors in Clinton

CLINTON — A new salon, one that is part of the largest salon brand in North America, is making its home in Clinton.

Great Clips, which has replaced the former U.S. Cellular location in the Virginia Avenue strip mall, waited a long time to access that specific space.

“One of the things we like about Clinton is that it’s a nice-sized market and the people that live 20 or 30 miles outside are going to travel to (here) to do their shopping. That’s why we chose near Walmart; it’s a high traffic area,” Great Clips co-owner Jim Petrowich said.

“We’ve been working with the landlord for more than a year waiting to get a space near Walmart,” said Petrowich, adding that convenience is one of the top priorities for the Great Clips franchise.

To kick off the salon business, Great Clips had a grand opening event Saturday that boasted high numbers and exceeded Petrowich’s expectations.

“We were optimistic before we opened, but after this weekend, we are even more optimistic,” Petrowich said.

Petrowich co-owns the salon with his operational partner, Pam Baum, and together the two have 17 locations spread between the Quad- Cities and Chicago areas.

The Great Clips franchise has more than 3,300 salons in the United States and Canada, and is the largest salon franchise in the world.

Along with overseeing salon operations, Baum is responsible for a number of things, including staffing licensed hairstylists and training them on new skills and up-to-date trends.

“The people we hire are your neighbors. We didn’t bring in people from somewhere else. These are friends and neighbors who come and work at Great Clips,” Petrowich said.

Because of the long hours of operation Great Clips has staffed 10 hairstylists for the Clinton location, with the addition of more being a strong possibility.

“We’re very optimistic that it’s going to be a great store; one of our best stores,” Petrowich said. “We’re excited to be in Clinton; we think (it) is a great town and we’re very happy to have a new business (here).”
