FULTON, Ill. — The River Bend Board of Education has delayed approving next year’s school calendar.
In light of this year’s extreme weather, which has already required the district to cancel six days of school, the board is looking into marking certain holidays as “waiver days.”Once designated, school cancellations could be made up on these holidays, instead of the end of the year.
“Putting five days at the end of our school year probably doesn’t add to the educational value,” Board President Dan Portz said.
During its meeting last week, the board considered six different 2014-15 school calendar proposal, with different holiday and spring break options for the waiver days.
Before making a decision, the board agreed that the school principals should poll their employees on which holidays they would rather give up if necessary.
The board also officially approved submitting the sixth instructional day, missed on Feb. 5, as an Act of God day with the Illinois State Board of Education.
