Volleyball roundup: Trojans, Irish finish 1-2 in tourney

Herald Staff Report

CLINTON — Preston, ranked 14th in Class 1A, didn’t drop a game Saturday as it swept through the Prince of Peace volleyball tournament.

The Trojans (8-2) won all five matches they played and their closest game was 21-16 against the host Irish. Other than a 21-16, 21-15 loss to Preston, the host Irish didn’t drop a game, and took second with a 4-1 record.

Fulton Unity Christian dropped all five of its matches but took Cedar Valley Christian to three games, losing 15-21, 21-15, 15-12.

The key contest of the day for local fans was between the two Big East rivals, who finished the tournament 1-2.

Prince of Peace (4-3) jumped to an 8-3 lead, after a four-point run. Hunter Chapman served back-to-back aces and then Julia Isenhour had a block and knocked down a kill.

That’s when the Trojans started their comeback. Broke Krogman had a solo block. Emily Strait knocked down a kill. Then Ryleigh Keeney knocked down back-to-back kills. An ace by Strait and a net violation on the Irish, tied the score at 10.

With the score tied at 12, Keeney and Krogman each drilled kills, giving Preston the lead for the rest of the game.

In Game 2, Preston led 7-6 when Strait went back to serve. She reeled off six service points in a row, including three aces and a kill by Keeney.

Prince of Peace didn’t get closer than five the rest of the way. Cassie Aldis finished the match with an ace.
