Fulton looking for marina dock operator

FULTON, Ill. — With boats going in the water on April 15, the City of Fulton is looking for someone to run the gas dock on the south end of the marina.

Public Works Director Dan Clark said the city is looking for someone to sell things like ice, soft drinks, beer, pizza and sandwiches, along with gas. The city had hoped to have an agreement with a local station, but it fell through.

“We believe it would be a great service to our marina if we could get a retail group in there to do that,” Clark said. He added that the boaters have expressed a desire to be able to purchase ice and other items.

The city is willing to offer incentives to someone interested in operating the location. This would include free rent for a year, free electricity and help with some maintenance equipment. The city would also maintain the gas pumps and the outside of the building. The individual would be responsible for getting a supply of gas and obtaining any necessary licenses, such as a liquor license.

The Fulton City Council discussed the issue at a budget work session on Saturday. Alderman Randy Boonstra said at that time that with the mark up for fuel for boats, someone should be able to make a pretty good profit running the gas dock.

If no one is found to run it, the city will operate the gas dock, but will only sell gas. Anyone interested in operating the location should contact Clark at the city hall.

Clark reports that the Public Works Department has made several updates to the marina since the city took over its operation in October. The launch docks have been reworked and parking has been widened. Clark said they also cleaned up the boats that were sitting on the east side of the dock. Public Works crews were at the marina Wednesday removing trees and debris.

The city also has signed a contract with Donny Saiter for him to be the marina mechanic, beginning May 1.
