Canyon hosts bluegrass concert

FULTON, Ill. — After a successful trial run that exceeded any and all expectations, the Fulton Bluegrass Festival is back at it and ready to rock the canyon once again.

The second Fulton Bluegrass Festival will take place from noon to 6 p.m. June 21 at Heritage Canyon in Fulton, where guests will hear the musical stylings of six unique bluegrass and folk bands that are thrilled to be back at the canyon.

“We booked the bands in less than an hour this year,” said event organizer Bob Whitten. “It think it’s because of the atmosphere, the festival atmosphere itself as well as the acoustics in the canyon. All the musicians were excited to come back.”

And come back they did. Out of the six musical acts that will perform at this year’s bluegrass festival, four are returning for a second time.

Those four include crowd favorites Frank F. Sidney’s Western Bandit Volunteers, Dirt Simple, The Wise Apple Riders and The Matriarchs. Joining them is The Way Down Wanderers and Bigfoot’s Brother, who Whitten expects will be a huge hit with the bluegrass crowd.

“We’ve got some kids coming out of Peoria called the Way Down Wanderers and they are amazing,” Whitten said. “They’re just out of their teens, playing some of the most amazing bluegrass I’ve ever heard. It’s new wave bluegrass, Avett Brothers style. I’m really excited to see them this year.”

While he expects the mix of new wave and old-school bluegrass is sure to keep the crowd entertained, one area he wanted to up the ante was in children’s entertainment.

Last year’s face-painting station and temporary tattoos were a big hit among the little ones but this year he wanted to take it one step further and really give the kids something appealing to keep their minds occupied during the afternoon.
