Hot start, strong finish

FULTON, Ill. — A day after a struggle at the plate, Fulton found a dozen runs during the third game of the Fulton Invitational softball tournament against West Carroll to end the day.

The game went four innings, and the Steamers used all four of them to their advantage. Fulton scored six runs in the second inning, four in the third, and a run apiece in the first and fourth innings.

Fulton (4-9) hit six extra-base hits, including a third-inning solo home run from shortstop Jenna Jones.

The second inning for the Steamers started with a single from Faith Kennedy, and it was the first of four singles that the Steamers accumulated that inning. Jamie Huennekens’s single brought in Kennedy, then Maddy Andresen walked with the bases loaded to bring in Ann Renkes.

Jones then had her other extra-base hit in the second that brought in two more hits. Kennedy appeared for the second time of the inning and walked before Renkes also walked in her second plate appearance.

The Steamers sent everyone to the plate in the third inning. Jones finished the rally with her long ball, but Averi Leitzen started it with a walk. Whitney Wyknoop, Huennekens, and Olivia Edfors each got a hit in the inning.

Leitzen and Huennekens each hit doubles in the fourth.

West Carroll actually started the game with the lead by scoring four runs in the first inning. Camerin Huizenga started the game in the circle for the Steamers but walked each of the first five Thunder hitters, and Fulton coach Jessica Rosenow wasted no time relieving Huizenga of her duties.

Wynkoop came on in relief, and despite walking two additional Thunder hitters in the first inning, she allowed just four baserunners in the game’s remainder.

Brianna Kampmeier brought in Abby Maike on an RBI double in the fourth inning.
