Steamers top Galena; tie Iowa-Grant

FULTON, Ill. — All Fulton needed on Saturday to defeat Galena was one hit.

Of course, Galena committed two errors that proved to be costly as Fulton won 5-2. Seth Sanderson got the lone hit for the Steamers in the bottom of the fifth with a double, but he was left stranded.

Jack Lemke reached first base on an error, then Tyler Sweenie walked. Two batters later, Trey Simmons laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought in Sweenie. Lemke scored on a balk.

Ethan Jones led off the sixth inning with a walk, then rounded the bases on a stolen base and two passed balls. Devon Ballard reached on an error and later scored on another balk. Paul Velasco reached on a walk, advanced to second base on a throwing error and advanced the last 180 feet on a balk and passed ball.

Lemke was the starting pitcher and threw the first five innings. He allowed the two earned runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Ballard came in for two innings of relief.

Later Saturday, Fulton and Iowa-Grant, from Livingston, Wis., settled to a tie in seven innings. Fulton got seven hits in the game, including two from Simmons. Sanderson, Jones, Ballard and Jack Reed each had an RBI.

On the mound, Michael Dixon got the start. He went four innings on 51 pitches; he allowed one run (unearned) while walking three and striking out three Iowa-Grant batters. Sanderson and Ballard split the other two innings. Sanderson went through his inning in 12 pitches while Ballard needed 15 to get out of his inning. Ballard faced eight hitters, and threw a first pitch strike to seven of them.
