Jones' gem lifts Fulton to win

FULTON, Ill. — Ethan Jones threw a three-hit shutout and drove in the first of two sixth-inning runs as Fulton defeated Erie/Prophetstown 2-0 on Monday in Three Rivers Conference baseball.

Jones walked four batters and struck out nine as he outdueled the Panthers’ Jordan Chandler and Ethan Howard. Chandler allowed three hits and both runs over the first 5 1/3 innings, and Howard followed with two-thirds of an inning of one-hit relief.

“Ethan was as dominating as he has been all season, and we played great defense behind him,” Fulton coach Kyle Miller said. “It was a great win, and we hope to build on it for regionals. Hat’s off to Ethan.”

Chandler and Howard had the only hits for Erie/Prophetstown. Howard singled in the second inning, but Chandler’s hit threatened to do some damage.

Chandler led off the sixth inning with a double, and Kyle Coleman followed with a walk. But Jones got out of trouble when Owen McConnell hit into a double play and Howard grounded out for the third out.

The Steamers (11-14, 7-4 Three Rivers) then struck in their half of the inning. Seth Sanderson reached on a one-out single, and Trey Simmons reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners on first and second. Jones singled to score Sanderson, and Devon Ballard followed with another run-scoring single.

“After a tough weekend the kids came out and beat a very good E/P team,” Miller said.

The Steamers dropped three games Saturday, falling 10-6 to Stockton/Warren, 6-3 to Elgin and 8-3 to East Dubuque.

The Steamers were an inning away from a 6-0 win against Stockton/Warren but surrendered 10 runs in the seventh inning.
