Sustaining the future: Historical society to host silent auction

FULTON, Ill. — The Fulton Historical Society prides itself on sustaining its own financial responsibilities, but as with everything, sometimes there just isn’t enough money.

To offset some of the society’s yearly expenses, the group will host a silent auction at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Martin House Museum.

“We typically don’t have fundraisers so this is something new for us,” lifetime Historical Society member Victoria Lockhart said.

The event was created to serve two important purposes — to generate revenue for the museum and to invite the community to explore becoming a historical society member.

The money raised at the silent auction will go back into the Martin House budget to be used to fund programs at the museum, buy new items to feature and maintain the property, and its grounds.

“We do fundraisers to provide programs and to buy things for the house,” Martin House Director Barb Mask said. “These historical items can sometimes cost a lot of money, but they are so valuable to the museum.”

This will be the first auction that the historical society will put on, but Lockhart and her partner Susan Wilson, have exceeded all the expectations they put on themselves.

Collectively the two have generated more than $2,000 worth of merchandise in just six weeks to be auctioned at Sunday’s event.

“Everybody was so eager to help,” Lockhart said. “We were hardly ever turned down.”

Because of the abundance of items that will be auctioned off, the group will be hosting a preview session from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and will serve light refreshments while people browse.

Some of the items going up for auction will be an overnight stay at the Wild Rose Casino and Resort and a $25 gift card to Coaches; 14 karat diamond and tanzanite earrings; a DeWalt tote and power tool case; and one of the most interesting item up for auction is dinner for eight, served by Mask, at her historical, victorian home.
