Mission Gateway volunteers go the extra mile

FULTON, Ill. — Volunteers are braving the heat to help out Gateway communities.

Evangelical Free Church members completed service projects throughout Fulton on Wednesday as part of their Mission Gateway program.

A group of 20 volunteers, of all ages, spent the day painting fire hydrants downtown, picking up trash along the bike path and cleaning up Unity Christian schools.

“Some groups go to different countries, but we wanted to help out right where we live,” Chris Pluister, a group leader, said.

The three-week program includes service activities in Fulton, Clinton and Camanche.

The group has served meals to first responders, helped out at the Victory Center and has plans to help with RAGBRAI as well as build a house for Habitat for Humanity.

“We just want to help out and show Jesus’ love and care for the community,” Cindy Nelson, a member of the group, said.
