Fulton seeks city admin candidates

---- — FULTON, Ill. — A search is under way for a new Fulton city administrator.

With current City Administrator Randy Balk retiring this fall, the Fulton City Council is starting a selection process for someone to fill his position. Mayor Larry Russell passed out some paperwork outlining steps the city will take to find a new city administrator.

This process included creating a city profile for candidates to learn about Fulton and the position. Russell thanked Tourism Director Heather Bennett for working on this. The profile will be posted on the ILCMA website and the job will be advertised in several local newspapers.

“And the theory is you’re basically selling yourself,” Russell said. He added that the profile is designed to show the attractive aspects of the Fulton community.

The city administrator position includes an annual salary of between $70,000 and $85,000. This individual reports to the mayor and council and is responsible for all city operations and a fiscal year budget of approximately $3.4 million. Applicants are expected to have two to three years of experience in municipal government.

Originally, applicants were required to have at least a bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field. However, Alderman Randy Boonstra pointed out they may lose qualified people simply because they do not have the necessary degree. He felt the education should be preferred, but not mandatory.

Russell agreed they might need to be flexible. He added that if the best applicant does not meet all of the requirements, they might be able to reduce the salary a bit.

Russell, Balk and Alderwoman Barb Mask will review all applications during the week of Aug. 5. A review committee of Alderman Wes Letcher, Russell and members of the community will select the top candidates. Those in the community wanting to help with the search should contact Letcher or Russell.

Russell hopes to bring a hiring recommendation to the council by Sept. 3. The individual would start at the beginning of October.
