Driving down memory lane

FULTON, Ill. — A program this weekend will feature a discussion on the Lincoln Highway.

Lynn Asp, director of the Lincoln Highway Association headquarters in Franklin Grove, Ill., will present the program at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fulton (Martin House) Museum, 707 19th Ave. She will explain the year-long centennial plans and distribute handouts of photos and fact sheets pertinent to the Lincoln Highway throughout its history to each attendee.

The local focus will consist of a powerpoint presentation on the Lincoln Highway from Morrison, Ill., to Fulton and the monument in Clinton dedicated to W. F. Coan, a major force in getting the highway into Clinton and the route it took through Lyons and Clinton.

Photos of the Lyons-Fulton High Bridge will be included.

The Fulton Tourist Park and other outcomes of the highway’s passage though Fulton will be shared. The Twin Oaks Resort, which was located 4 miles east of Fulton, is included in the presentation.

The Boy Scouts of America played a key role in the signage of the Lincoln Highway on Sept. 1, 1928. Three-thousand mile markers were installed that day. One of them is located at the Fulton Museum. That organizational effort also will be discussed.

Refreshments will be served. The Fulton Museum is handicap accessible.
