Queens advance eight entries to conference finals

ELDRIDGE — The Clinton River Queens advanced to the finals in eight of nine brackets in first day action of the Mississippi Athletic Conference girls tennis tournament.

Clinton advanced netters in each of the first five singles brackets and all three doubles brackets.

Ellen Russell (No. 1), Claire Cornilsen (No. 2), Katie Crites (No. 3), Alyson Goetzl (No. 4) and Megan Determan (No. 5) all won two matches to advance to the championship round.

In doubles play, Russell and Cornilsen advanced in the No. 1 doubles bracket, while Crites and Goetzl and Determan and Sarah Massey will vie for titles in the No. 2 and 3 doubles spots respectively.

Massey will battle for third place in the No. 6 singles bracket tonight.

The River Queens hold a slight lead over Bettendorf as Clinton has accumulated 17.5 points and the Bulldogs 16.

Clinton head coach Cindy Rasche was pleased with her entire teams performance on the first day of play.

“(Assistant coach) Barb (Brondyke) and I are thrilled with being in eight of the nine finals,” Rasche said. “It was our finest tennis to date. Clair Cornilsen had to have some awesome focus to win in singles. She is a baseline player and had to come out of her element to attack the net.”

The tournament will resume tonight with the Clinton YMCA’s Armstorng Complex serving as the rain site.
