Irish soccer team bests Marquette

CLINTON — The Prince of Peace soccer team evened its overall record to 5-5-2 with a 6-2 win over Bellevue Marquette.

The Irish grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute after midfielder Jason Kim placed a half-volley into back of the net.

In the 14th minute, Ben Carr created a 40 yard dribbling run and put the ball by the Marquette keeper to make the score 2-0.

As the first half drew to an end, Carr provided the assist on a quality score by Prince of Peace forward Keaton Connell to give the Irish a 3-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Mohawks found the net in the 47th minute from left of the penalty area, making the score 3-1.

Irish freshman tandem Sean Williams and Derek Witt answered in the 49th minute as Williams assisted Witt, providing a perfect ball into open space and leaving Witt alone with the Mohawk keeper.

The Mohawks answered in the 56th with a 35 yard chip shot making the score 4-2.

In the 69th, Irish center midfielder Riley Bly provided a quality pass to Andy Schnier who drove the ball in the left side to make the score 5-2.

Carr would provide the final touch for the Irish, again creating off the dribble and driving the ball into the net.

“Our midfield played a very nice match tonight. Bly, Carr, Connell, Williams and Witt did well to vary our rhythm of play while still keeping consistent service where we were creating space,” Prince of Peace head coach Brandon Connell said. “Marquette's pressure was high, and they do a nice job of taking away the easy first service. Our midfielders and forwards adjusted nicely, though. Dan Schnier and Brice Bitler were solid again in the back line, and we were getting high quality passing out of Bly, Connell, and Williams which created many chances in this match.”

“We allowed two goals which I thought we should have prevented, so we're going to put more work into a few defensive issues and evaluate the improvement between this match and the next.” Connell added.

The reserve match saw goals by Nick Lucritz, Joe Vens, and two by Brice Bitler as the Prince of Peace recorded a 4-0 victory.

The Irish will host Cono Christian next Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Camanche High School.
