River Kings take fourth place in MAC

CLINTON — The Clinton River Kings hosted the boys Mississippi Athletic Conference boys track and field championship on Friday with Pleasant Valley running away with the conference title at Bill Holsclaw Track.

The Spartans racked up 159 team points in the win.

The River Kings raced to a fourth place finish with 104 points, trailing second place Bettendorf (119 points) and third place Burlington (112).

Pleasant Valley won seven events on the evening, while Burlington won five.

Clinton won three events on their way to the fourth place showing. Ethan Holmes took individual conference championships in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles.

Holmes defended his 2007 conference title in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.01. The Clinton junior ran a time of 15.13 at the 2007 MAC meet.

In the 400 hurdles, the 2008 Drake Relays Champion was just a half-of-a-second off of the conference record with a winning time of 53.94. Holmes defended his conference title after running a 55.51 at last season’s meet.

“My time (in the 400-meter hurdles) wasn’t what I expected,” Holmes said after the win. “I knew the PV guy was closing, but I knew I had the lead and the time. Since Drake I have been running pretty relaxed.”

Scott DeAngelis collected Clinton’s other win with gold in the 800-meter dash. DeAngelis came into the meet with the fifth fastest time of the year in the conference at 2:02.98.

The River King senior ran a time of 2:00.40 in the win, more than two seconds faster than his previous best time of the year.

“I felt good. I looked at the seed and saw that I was seeded fifth and I knew I was going to have to take it to it hard. Everyone was yelling on the last lap, so I knew it was close.” DeAngelis said after holding off Pleasant Valley’s top-seeded Devin Albaugh, who finished second with a time of 2:00.93.

The River Kings also recorded four runner-up finishes on the evening.

Holmes took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.81, while senior Jordan Camp tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 5-10.

Clinton also claimed silver medals in the 4x800 (8:15.33) and the 4x400 (3:24.20) relays.

The River Kings also had a pair of third place showings.

Sophomore David Johnson took bronze in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.82 and Jaryd Prince was third in the shot put with a toss of 48-1.

Clinton head coach Tony Smith had mixed reviews of his team’s performance afterward.

“We have a lot of young kids, some performed well and others not so well,” Smith commented. “It was good to get the younger kids some experience in a big time meet.”

“We were hoping for second or third, but we got fourth,” Smith added. “I thought Ethan was solid as was Scotty DeAngelis and Jordan Camp. The seniors stepped up and the youngsters are coming along.”
