Northeast boys in second place, Preston-East Central girls third

DES MOINES — It was another busy day at Drake Stadium for local track and field teams on Friday with many highlights.

The Northeast boys and Preston-East Central girls each ended the day in the top three in the team standings.

The Rebels are second with a day to go with 18 points.

The Trojans sit at third overall, behind strong field event showings.

Junior Tiffany Bormann claimed second in the high jump with a height of 5-5, while teammate Lauryn Camp took fourth in the discus with a toss of 108-10.

The Northeast boys got a third place finish from their distance medley team of Lucas Rorah, Jacob Dever, Baron Loots and Ryan Krogmann.

The team finished with a time of 3:36.78.

The race was drama filled as Krogmann, the anchor took the baton in eighth place. The Northeast junior ran his team to first place before BCLUW Conrad’s anchor Dane McDonald passed Krogmann in the last 50 meters to take the win.

Despite the high finish, the team had high hopes for the relay.

“I think if we would have given Ryan a better starting place we would have done better,” Rorah, a senior, said. “We thought we had a very legitimate shot at a title. We’re happy with third, but it still hurts.”

Krogmann felt the 800 meters took its toll on his legs.

“I’m definitely feeling the burn,” Krogmann said. “The rest of the guys were sitting back a little longer than I did, but I thought I had them. I was hoping we could win it, but I knew there were a lot of tough teams though.”

The Northeast girls took runner-up with their distance medley team of Maria Rickertsen, Demi Diedrich, Audrey Moehr and Morgan Casey. The foursome ran a time of 4:13.06, just seconds behind North Tama, whose anchor, Brooke Dinsdale, led her team to the win after being in last place at the beginning of her leg.

Casey gave the Rebels the lead during her anchor leg, before Dinsdale stormed to the front.

“It was an awesome race,” Moehr said. “Morgan ran a strong anchor leg, but she got passed by a very good runner. All in all we ran well. We broke the school record that Demi’s mom’s team held. We had been undefeated all year in the event, but I’m happy with it.”

The Camanche girls did well in the 4x200-meter relay, as the team of McKinzie McDaniel, Karissa Turner, Ashley Gonzalez and Courtney Harksen ran a time 1:46.63 to break the school record and take fourth overall.

“It was amazing,” Turner said. “We set a good goal for ourselves, we went after it and we got it. We ran our best time by two seconds.”

“We did amazing,” Harksen added. “It was way beyond out expectations.”

“We came in knowing what we had to do and we did it.” McDaniel said.

Gonzalez, a freshman, admitted that she was nervous heading into the event, but they subsided when she got the baton.

“This is my first year here (at state) and I was really nervous, but it’s not so bad.” Gonzalez said.

Camanche head coach Brenda Metzger was pleased with her teams performance.

“They ran a school record and we are excited about that,” Metzger said. “I think they all ran personal best splits, if not it was close. We came out knowing what we wanted to do and that’s exactly what they did.”

Andrew’s Corey Manders also took a silver medal on Friday, as he ran a time of 54.44 in the 400-meter hurdles. The time was a personal best for Manders.

“I can’t believe I ran my personal best time by a second and I still got second,” said Manders, who was 11th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.73. “All I was thinking on home stretch was to go as hard as I could and give it all. That’s what I did. I did it, but that kid was good.”

Mander’s classmate at Andrew, Michelle Deppe, also had a solid showing in the hurdles.

Deppe ran a 1:05.17 in the 400-meter hurdles to take fourth overall after winning her section by a comfortable margin.

“It was strenuous, but I did it mostly for my coach, Craig Reuter, who we call “the hurdling genious”,” Deppe said. “I tried so hard to get my best time.”

Deppe also qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.90

Maquoketa’s Eric Manson was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20-6, while Central DeWitt’s Ben Lubben was seventh at 20-5 _.

The Central DeWitt girls 4x200-meter relay team of Marissa Martin, Michelle Green, Eryca Schebler and Kayla Selby took fourth in the Class 3A field with a time of 1:46.71.
