Herald Staff Report
GOOSE LAKE With the international tiebreaker rule in use, Calamus-Wheatland pushed a run across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge host Northeast and claim a 4-3 victory in the third-place game of the Northeast softball tournament Friday.
Under the tiebreaker rule, each team starts the inning with a runner on second base.
Northeast (14-14) opened with a 14-13 win against East Central, then lost 13-1 to Wilton in the semifinals.
After picking up just one hit in its opener, an 11-0 loss to Calamus-Wheatland, Clinton came back with an 8-0 win against Olin and a 12-9 victory against East Central to claim fifth place.
After a slow start in the first game, we stepped it up and hit the ball well, Clinton coach Trina Reed said. Team chemistry and positive attitudes helped us get it done today. Hats off to our girls for battling back from a five-run deficit (against East Central) to pull off the win.
Katelyn Ryan was named to the all-tournament team with five hits, five runs and great defensive play.
