Trojans fall again at state

FORT DODGE — The Preston Trojans dropped a 3-1 decision to Southeast Webster-Grand in an Iowa Class 1A Consolation Semifinal at the Iowa State Softball Tournament at Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.

The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the first as national career stolen bases leader, Jennifer Jorgensen, singled on a bunt to lead off the inning.

Jorgensen then stole second and moved to third on a Renee Castenson bunt to first base.

With two outs, Jorgensen scored on an error on a ball to third by Morgan Hansen.

Shelby Messersmith also reached on an error as Hansen scored on the play to give the Eagles the early 2-0 lead.

Preston’s Kelcie Bormann singled to lead off the second inning, then advanced to second on a passed ball. She reached third on a groundout to third by senior Lauren Camp.

The Trojans could not capitalize on the scoring threat though as Jorgensen sat the Trojans down in order after Bormann’s single.

Southeast Webster-Grand added another run in the third to up their lead to 3-0. It would be all the run support they would need to take the win.

Lisa Heun doubled in teammate, Morgan Hansen, who walked two batters earlier.

With one out in the fourth inning, Preston got a pair of singles from Kelcie Bormann and Tiffany Bormann to give the Trojans a pair of baserunners.

After Camp popped out, Whitney Bormann hit into a fielder’s choice, as Kelcie Bormann was out at third. The Eagles had once again got out of an inning after Preston put runners on base.

The Trojans managed to score in the sixth to get within two at 3-1.

After Megan Zeimet struck out and Kelcie Bormann grounded out to second, Tiffany Bormann walked to give Preston a base runner with two outs.

Camp singled up the middle, advancing Tiffany Bormann to third. Camp, then stole second. An error on the play, plated Tiffany Bormann and put Camp at third.

That was the only run the Trojans could manage though as Jorgensen got Preston to go down in order in the seventh.

Preston head coach Tim Zeimet thought his team played solid softball, but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities presented them.

“The same as the first game (a 1-0 loss to Newell-Fonda), we had people on base we just could not get them in,” Zeimet said. “We battled though and I’m proud of the way the girls played. Kelcie (Bormann) pitched a heck of a game, even though we lost. She didn’t give an earned run in the game.”

Kelcie Bormann was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Jorgensen led the Eagles with a 4-for-4 day at the plate. She also added four stolen bases to her career total of 347.

The Trojans will now play Freemont-Mills for seventh place at 10 a.m. today.

Preston is now 24-13 on the season, while Southeast Webster-Grand is 33-9
