Miller’s 79 paces Clinton in tourney

NORTH SCOTT — Clinton High School head golf coach Paul Niedermeyer said his team is close to competing with the top teams in the MAC, and during Wednesday’s North Scott Invitational, it showed.
Although Clinton placed fourth out of six teams with a 328, the River Kings finished four strokes away from third place Muscatine. Niedermeyer said each individual needs to continue to shave strokes to compete with the conference’s elite.
“It was a weird day, pretty cold and windy,” Niedermeyer said. “It definitely wasn’t easy, but we have to keep striving to improve. We need to cut everyone’s score down by two or three strokes if we’re going to be a good team.”
Sophomore Jeremy Miller led the way for the River Kings, posting a 79. Miller, who started on hole-17, struggled on the front nine shooting a 42, but came back with a 37 on the back nine.
“He’s playing really well,” Niedermeyer said about Miller, who finished fourth out of 36 individuals. “He was really good on the back (nine), and it’s tougher I think. He said he putted really well.”
Elliott Deering recorded three penalty strokes during his round, but still turned in an 81, good enough for a ninth place tie.
Freshman Christian Rowan tied for 15th with an 83, while Brennen Roling and Greg Heysinger each recorded an 85.
Tony Balk’s 89 did not count toward the team score.
“That was another strong showing for Rowan,” Niedermeyer said. “Really, over the history of the high school, there’s not a lot of freshman that have played varsity. He’s not only played, but counted almost every time for us.”
Davenport Central claimed the title, shooting a 311, while Pleasant Valley took second at 318. However, neither of those teams registered the tournament’s best overall score.
The Pleasant Valley JV team produced a 305, outdistancing Clinton’s JV second place finish by 44 strokes. Niedermeyer said the Spartans mixed his varsity golfers between the JV and varsity squads.
For Clinton, which shot 349, Alex Feaster turned in an 84 and Alex Baker registered an 86. Matt Gray and Logan Hood had an 87 and 92 respectively.
Clinton returns to action for the Davenport Assumption Invitational Monday at Emeis Golf Course.
