BELLEVUE Camanche picked up its second consecutive high school volleyball tournament title Saturday, beating Preston in a battle of ranked teams at the Marquette Invitational.
Camanche, ranked No. 13 in Class 2A, defeated the Trojans, No. 5 in 1A, in a three-game match in pool play and then won the rematch in the championship 25-21, 25-13. The Indians reached the final with a 25-11, 25-10 victory against host Marquette, ranked No. 8 in 1A.
This felt more like a conference tournament than a regular Saturday Invitational, Camanche coach Mark Cremer said. The top four teams all were from the Big East Conference.
Camanches closest test was its 18-21, 21-16, 15-7 win against Preston in pool play.
Our pool match with Preston was a nail-biter, Cremer said. Sloppy serve reception let them jump out to a 5-2 advantage early in the first game. We worked back in front at 17-15 after a half-dozen sideout exchanges but then let Emily Henningsen run off five points in a row to put them up 20-17.
Cremer said it was more of the same in Game 2. Kills by Tiffany Bormann and Brena Smithson helped the Trojans to the early lead, and they made it 14-8 on an ace serve by Korissa Daniels. But, the Indians got key contributions at the service line to pull it out. Lindsey Nissen had a couple of aces in a five-point run, and Chelsea Moore later finished the game by serving the final six points.
The third game came down to a four-point service run by Chelsea and then a three-point run by Tiana Bark to end the match at 15-7, Cremer said.
Marquette defeated East Central 25-17, 25-10 for third place. The win avenged a three-game loss in pool play. After going 3-0 in Pool A, the Raiders played Preston tough, losing two 25-22 games.
While we fell short of what we wanted to accomplish coming out of pool play, I was very happy with our balanced offense and continued improvements throughout the day, East Central coach Brenda McKone said.
