DE WITT — Only one spot separated Central DeWitt’s Frank Futselaar and Ryan Hamby at Thursday’s Saber Invita-tional boys cross country meet, but their opinions of the race couldn’t have been much different. They agreed on one thing, though: It was a great day for their team.
Futselaar placed third, Hamby was fifth and teammates Nolan Knudson, Ben Niemann and Daniel Barnes also placed in the top 18 to lead the Sabers to the team championship of their own meet at Grace Lutheran Camp. The Sabers finished with 57 points, nine ahead of runner-up Davenport Assumption, which was led by individual champion Tommy Harris.
“The team win probably was the best part,” said Hamby, who finished the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 22 seconds.
There was no question about that for Futselaar.
“I’m not happy about the race,” Futselaar said. “It was really bad. The air was so dry, and that really bothers me. I’m not used to the hills where I live (in the Netherlands). My time (17:22) wasn’t anything like Saturday (when he ran 16:45 at the Clinton Invitational).”
Hamby, on the other hand, was excited by his finish, six days after winning the freshman-sophomore race at the Clinton Invitational.
“This is my first full year, so I didn’t know how well I would do,” he said. “I’m peaking, and my times are coming down. I have surprised myself. I didn’t expect to be so high on the varsity. I kind of just wanted to make the varsity this season.”
Camanche’s Codie Adams finished between the DeWitt teammates in 17:28. He said if he had approached the race differently he might even have caught Futselaar.
“I was looking for Frank, and I wanted to sit on him, but he went out quick and I didn’t think I could stick,” Adams said. “But he slowed, and I probably could have.”
Still, he said he enjoyed competing against some different runners.
“Seeing different people always is more fun,” he said. “It can hurt you, though, because you don’t always know who to run with.”
As it turned out, no one could run with Assumption’s Harris. His won in 17:00 and was 19 seconds faster than runner-up Brandt Moore of Bellevue Marquette. Moore, who often runs races against Prince of Peace’s Drew Sikkema, the top-ranked runner in Class 1A, admitted that it can be a bit frustrating to finish second often.
“You see kids below you in the rankings winning, and you have to remember who you’re finishing behind,” Moore said.
“This definitely helps a whole lot,” Moore said of how well he ran against Harris and other runners he rarely sees. “I usually run against Drew once or twice a week. I try to keep my confidence up that I can win, and this keeps my confidence going.”
