Ernst named all-state

DES MOINES – Drew Schroeder of Central DeWitt and Cory Wirth of Maquoketa each earned first-team honors in Class 3A, and Clinton’s Brady Ernst, Camanche’s Derek Harksen, Central DeWitt’s Jake Kagemann, Easton Valley’s Andrew Driscoll and Chase Zaruba, and Maquoketa’s Cohl Kueter also earned honors on the Iowa Newspaper Association all-state football teams that were announced today.

Ernst, a first-team All-Mississippi Athletic Conference receiver, earned third-team honors in Class 4A at wideout. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound junior hauled in 27 passes for 437 yards and 11 touchdowns this season for the River Kings (4-6).

Ernst was one of 15 MAC players named to one of the three all-state squads. State champion West Des Moines Dowling and state runner-up Cedar Rapids Xavier led the first-team picks with five and four, respectively, with eight of them coming on defense.

Schroeder was selected on the offensive line in Class 3A, while Wirth earned his honor as a kicker. With Schroeder as one of the leaders, the Sabers’ line was instrumental in DeWitt ranking 16th in total offense in 3A with 3738 yards in 10 games. Wirth, sidelined late in the season by an injury, made all 26 of his point-after-touchdown kicks and was perfect on all seven field goal tries (tying for the 3A lead in made attempts) with a long of 49 yards.

Kagemann was named to the second team at defensive back in Class 3A, while Kueter was a third-team pick at linebacker.

Kagemann finished the year with 63 tackles and two interceptions. Kueter, a three-year starter, finished the year with 114 tackles and wrapped up his career as the Cardinals’ all-time leader in tackles with 284.

Harksen was named third-team punter in Class 2A, which he led in punting with 33 kicks for 44.5 yards.

In eight-player football, Driscoll was named the second-team punter, while Zaruba earned third-team honors in the offensive backfield.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
