Big East throwers tune up for conference meet

The Indians have plenty of other talent, too, and that makes Mensinger and his teammates excited about their chances at coming away with the team title Thursday.

“Our team chemistry holds us together,” he said. “We have fun doing what we do.”

No results were reported.

Kings 2nd at Muscatine

MUSCATINE — Clinton placed second behind Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Monday at the Dave Matthews Invitational boys track and field meet, getting a tuneup on the same track where Thursday’s Mississippi Athletic Conference meet will be held.

The River Kings didn’t run in many of their best events, as coach Tony Smith planned to treat the meet more like a workout.

Deshond Robinson was a double winner in the sprints to lead Clinton, which finished with 93 points. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.40 seconds and the 400 in 49.03.

Cody Collender took second in the long jump and also ran on the runner-up 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Clinton won the junior varsity team title.

Rebels place 2nd

MAQUOKETA — Northeast/East Central placed second with 109 points and Clinton took sixth with 67.5 on Monday at the Cardinal Relays girls track and field meet.

Cascade won the 10-team event with 139 points.

Clinton had a pair of champions. Erin Wenzel won the 800 meters in 2:27.07, and Kim Kaster won the 3,000 in 11:33.27. Wenzel also took second to Bellevue/Marquette Catholic’s Sarah Lampe in the 400. Lampe won in 58.08, while Wenzel was next in 1:03.05.

Northeast picked up four titles. Aleenah Marcucci was a double winner in the hurdles. She won the 100 hurdles in 16.14 and the 400s in 1:07.50. Danae Diedrich won the 100 in 13.09. The Rebels also won the 800 relay in 1:47.54.

Preston’s Brooke Krogman tied for first in the high jump at 4-10.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
