---- — RIVERDALE — Aided by three victories in super tiebreakers, Clinton defeated Pleasant Valley 8-1 on Tuesday in a girls tennis matchup of two of the top teams in the Mississippi Athletic Conference.

“It was a good win for us,” Clinton coach Cindy Rasche said. “There were a number of close matches, so we have plenty of work to do before Monday and Tuesday (when the MAC meet is played at North Scott).”

Clinton’s Jordan Nelson (No. 3 singles), Samantha Brisch (No. 4) and Nelson and Gabby Haan at No. 2 doubles all won super tiebreakers by the same score (10-6) after splitting the first two sets with their opponents.

“We’re getting better at playing those,” Rasche said. “We’ve spent time on them in practice. We’ve also spent a lot of time on serving and serve return.”

Clinton improved to 9-0 with the win.

CLINTON — After the teams split wins evenly in singles, Pleasant Valley won two of the three doubles matches and defeated Clinton 5-4 in boys tennis Tuesday at Max Lynn Courts.

Both of the Spartans’ doubles wins came in three-set matches, as did two of their wins in singles, a fact not lost on Clinton coach David Moore.

“We give away far too many points through loose play,” he said. “We lost all but one of the third sets because of our lack of consistency.

“When we try to hit outright winners from the baseline, rather than setting points up, we just aren’t very good.”

Jacob Kruse and Ryan Schroeder accounted for three of Clinton’s four wins. Kruse won at No. 1 singles, Schroeder won at No. 2 and they combined to win No. 1 doubles.

“Jacob was a bright spot,” Moore said. “He played excellent in both singles and doubles.”

The River Kings return to action Thursday at the Mississippi Athletic Conference meet at North Scott.
