Queens win rainy battle with Burlington

CLINTON — Days after recovering from an illness, Clinton goalkeeper Hannah Dehner delivered possibly her best performance yet in the 2013 season. The River Queens took down Mississippi Athletic Conference foe Burlington 1-0 on Thursday night in a rain-filled contest that came down to a shootout.

Dehner admitted after the game she still was under the weather.

“I was definitely back there coughing it up,” she said.

Since the game also involved two 10-minute overtimes, Dehner recorded 100 minutes of gametime. She finished with 15 saves and even helped her own cause in the end. Along with freshmen Krista Atkinson (Clinton’s other goalkeeper, playing with an injured thumb) and Emma Gettes, Dehner scored one of three penalty kicks in the shootout, while stopping all of Burlington’s shootout attempts.

“Dehner was in the game the whole time,” Clinton co-coach Spencer Mesick said. “She still wasn’t feeling good, but she sucked it up and made some big-time saves for us.”

This is also the first season Dehner (a junior) has played in goal. While coaches praised her performance, she credited her teammates with stepping up defensively.

“They all gave 100 percent tonight,” she said. “It was a good team win for us. I think it gave us a major boost going into this weekend.”

Mesick and co-coach Bill Feaster also credited the play of Anna Yackshaw, who was tasked with holding Burlington’s top scorer, Elsye Huber, at bay. Huber came into the match with the seventh-highest point total in the state with 40 points.

On Thursday, she was shut out.

“Anna Yackshaw, for sure, stepped up tonight,” Mesick said. “She was the one who was able to shut down their top scorer.”

Feaster added that it’s the first time in recent memory Clinton has beaten a MAC foe. The team improved to 3-7-0 on the year while Burlington fell to 5-5-0.
