Host school ends run by Fulton

OREGON, Ill. — Fulton’s season ended Tuesday with a 60-31 loss to host Oregon in the semifinals of the Illinois Class 2A Oregon Regional girls basketball tournament.

Oregon controlled the game from the start, outscoring the Steamers 17-6 in the first quarter. Sam Lambrigtsen scored seven of her game-high 22 points in the opening period.

Lambrigtsen scored seven more, and Mal Sanders added six, in the second quarter as the Hawks increased their edge to 33-11.

Rachael Beiermann, playing in her final game for Fulton (4-27), led the Steamers with seven points.

Newman nips Fillies

OREGON, Ill. — Mary Alice Oswalt capped an 18-point performance with a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds left that sent Sterling Newman past Morrison 44-43 on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Illinois Class 2A Oregon Regional girls basketball tournament.

The Comets will face host Oregon in Thursday’s 7 p.m. final.

After Oswalt’s free throws gave Newman the 44-43 lead, Morrison had a couple of chances to score but missed a pair of shots.

Chelsea Eads led Morrison with 14 points, and Kassidee Church added 11.

Morrison fought back after falling behind early.

Newman built an 11-5 lead in the first quarter and increased its edge to 26-19 at the half, as Oswalt scored eight points in the second period.

Morrison got within 36-32 in the third quarter, when Church scored eight of her points. Eads hit a pair of 3-pointers to help the comeback continue in the fourth quarter.

Prophets advance

PERU, Ill. — Clare Kramer scored 17 points and Karlie Stafford added 10, leading Prophetstown past Hall Township of Spring Valley 69-38 in the semifinals of the Class 2A Peru St. Bede Regional.

The Prophets will play for the regional title Thursday against Riverdale, which beat host Peru St. Bede 52-49 behind 21 points from Lauren Claus and 18 from Sydney Mericle.
