Kings 3rd in state meet

DES MOINES — Clinton put up its fourth-highest total of the season and came away with a third-place finish at the Iowa Class 2A boys bowling state tournament Tuesday at Plaza Lanes.

Buoyed by strong play in the Baker games, the River Kings rose from fifth place and finished just 45 points behind champion Davenport North and 15 in back of runner-up Dubuque Hempstead in the team race.

North, which finished third when Clinton won the Mississippi Athletic Conference title 11 days ago, held the lead after individual play and finished with a 3,269-pin total. Hempstead scored a 3,239, with Clinton at 3,224.

The River Kings totaled 2,104 pins in individual play, then strung together Baker games of 217, 224, 228, 266 and 185. Their season average in Baker play was 205 pins a game.

Tyrin Freels, a senior, led Clinton in individual competition, just missing the top 10 overall with games of 204 and 245 for a 449 total. His score was three pins behind Hempstead’s Zach Williams and Seth Tegtmeier of Marion Linn-Mar, who tied for ninth with 452 totals.

Jonah Starmer of Waukee was the individual champion with games of 268 and 232 for a 500 total. Alex Markov of Fort Dodge was second with a 494.

Clinton junior Tyler Schutte tied for 27th with a 208-215—423, while junior Evan Marr was 31st (194-226—420) and senior Tim Dawson was 35th (197-218—415. Tanner Heppner rounded out Clinton’s scoring with a 153-244—397, good for 44th place. Nick Heimbaugh was the sixth member of the squad and had games of 184 and 204 for a 388 total.

Nate Goettsch (485) and Bret Keimig (464) led North, taking fifth and sixth individually.

Waterloo West won the girls title with a 3,032-pin total. Mississippi Athletic Conference teams Bettendorf (2,971) and Muscatine (2,917) finished second and third. Bettendorf’s Michaela Kelly won the individual title with a 480 total.
