CEDAR RAPIDS — One area team has punched its ticket to the State Basketball Tournament next week, and DeWitt could become the second on Monday.
DeWitt Central will face Benton Community at Cedar Rapids Kennedy (7 p.m. tip-off), and the winner will be a representative of Class 3A.
DeWitt and Benton played once this season, but it was played more than three months ago. The Sabers won 54-52.
The Bobcats enter Monday’s game unbeaten in February and March. Benton faces DeWitt with a seven-game winning streak, with their last loss coming to Mount Vernon on Jan. 31.
Benton’s leading scorer is guard Nate Woeste, who is averaging 15.6 points per game. Woeste isn’t afraid to launch the ball from deep as he’s shot 100 3-point attempts and has hit a third of them.
The Bobcats also have 6-foot-3 Owen Hopkins, who averages 11.2 PPG entering Monday. Hopkins is shooting over 50 percent from the floor.
The Bobcats are averaging 61 points per game.
The Sabers key guy is Kyle Bauer, who enters the substate final scoring 15.3 PPG shooting just over 47 percent from the floor. Bauer had 13 points in the Feb. 27 win against Maquoketa.
DeWitt enters averaging 55 points per game, but they are capable scoring into the 70s, which they’ve done once (Feb. 3).
