Football: Herald All-Area First Team

(Continued)

DL/Jake Willging     Fulton

The season: Unaninimous all-conference selection. Recorded 34 solo tackles, 35 assists and 2.5 sacks. Also named second-team all-conference on offensive line.

The word: “He’s one of those guys the other team had to account for every time it broke the huddle. One of the best compliments is other teams ran away from him.” — Coach Patrick Lower

DL/Riley McDowell     Central DeWitt

The season: Second on the team with 67 tackles; in on 15 tackles for lost yardage and four sacks, both team highs.

The word: “Riley really worked hard, improved himself and was disciplined. He played on the other side of the line of scrimmage which was really spectacular. He was our ring leader in being able to contain the running game.” — Coach Mike Miller

DL/Thomas Smith     Clinton

The season: Impact player on defense with six sacks and 14 tackles for lost yardage. Recorded 42 tackles overall, 34 of them solos.

The word: “When Thomas explodes off the line, he’s tough to block. A lot of his tackles for loss were because several teams thought they could get outside of him, but he was able to close. Just using his physical presence out there provided leadership.” — Coach Lee Camp

DL/Austin Shoup     Morrison

The season: Earned first-team All-Three Rivers Conference North Division honors.

The word: “Austin uses his speed and athleticism to explode off the ball and create plays in the offensive backfield.” — Coach Cory Bielema

LB/Austin Regenwether     Fulton

The season: First-team all-conference on defense and offense, unanimous at running back with 1,233 yards rushing and 18 TDs. On defense he recorded 118 tackles, 58 solos.

The word: “As a linebacker, he came into his own. He impressed us as an inside linebacker covering sideline to sideline against the run and pass. He provided a rock we could lean on all year.” — Coach Patrick Lower

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
