Wrestling: Kings lose twice in MAC

ELDRIDGE — Clinton battled the other two teams expected to battle for third, fourth and fifth places in Mississippi Athletic Conference wrestling Thursday night and came out on the short end both times.

North Scott, ranked seventh in Iowa Class 3A by the, won the final four matches to come back and edge the River Kings 31-29 in the opening dual, then Pleasant Valley defeated Clinton 44-18 in the other dual. The Spartans and Lancers also beat Davenport West in the other half of the double dual.

The key match in the first dual was Mayson Shannon’s 6-4 win over Clinton’s Amani Larson at 113 pounds. Larson was in control for most of the match, but Shannon used one big move to pull out the victory. Trailing 4-0 in the final minute of the second period, he reversed Larson to his back for five points.

Larson, who rode out the first period after recording a takedown in the first 5 seconds, added a quick reversal in the second period and rode Shannon for most of the third period but was unable to turn him for back points. Larson cut loose Shannon in the last 20 seconds but couldn’t get a tying takedown.

That win put North Scott ahead 9-3, but Damon Dann (120 pounds) and Hunter Genco (126) recorded pins in the next two matches, and Riley Chapman followed with a decision at 132 to give Clinton an 18-9 lead.

After a North Scott win at 138, Curtis Ilg (145), Alex Caldwell (152) and Dustin Caldwell (160) scored successive wins to push Clinton’s lead to 29-12.

That was it for Clinton, however.

Derek Golinghorst recorded a pin at 170 pounds, then Mitch Bowman pinned Dillion Chase at 182 in a battle of the first- and third-ranked wrestlers at 170 (both wrestling up a weight) to pull the Lancers within 29-24. In another matchup of ranked wrestlers, North Scott’s second-rated Colin Kreiter beat No. 7 Justin Guilliams 14-4 at 195 to cut the deficit to one point, then Cordell Eaton capped the comeback with a win at 220.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
