Wrestling: Kings lose twice in MAC


Clinton suffered an early setback in its match against Pleasant Valley when 10th-ranked Spencer Nevills pinned No. 5 Genco in 6:13 at 126 pounds to give the Spartans an 18-6 lead. PV scored another minor upset at 152, where No. 8 Travis Willers beat No. 5 Alex Caldwell 5-0. That win put PV on top 29-9.

Clinton’s Dustin Caldwell, ranked sixth at 160, beat No. 10 Christian Foote 1-0 in the next match, but Pleasant Valley won four of the final five bouts to put away the win.

Fulton beats Newman

STERLING, Ill. — Preston Ford (182), Zack Jenkins (220) and Steven Balk (285) recorded pins in the upper weights to lead Fulton past Sterling Newman 39-28 in high school wrestling.

Brandon Kaecker also notched a pin for the Steamers, and Cole Grant won a key matchup at 132 pounds.

Panthers win 2

ERIE, Ill. — The middle of Erie/Prophetstown’s lineup contributed six-point wins in four consecutive matches in each dual Thursday as the Panthers defeated Riverdale 48-24 and Polo/Forreston 45-27.

Josh Wheeler (138 pounds), Jared Cole (145) and Dylan Binion (152) pinned their opponents in both duals, and Grady Todd picked up a pin and a forfeit at 132 to keep Erie/Prophetstown rolling.

Rebels, Comets fall

BELLEVUE — West Branch defeated Northeast 57-15 and Bellevue 69-6 in River Valley Conference wrestling.

Tyler Schoon recorded a pin at 138 pounds, and Octavio Cruz (145) won by decision to lead Northeast.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

    Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
    The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
    The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
    "College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
    Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
    Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
    He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
