Girls basketball: Strong finish lifts Fillies

Area roundup

MORRISON, Ill. — A strong fourth quarter lifted Morrison to a 48-38 Three Rivers Conference girls basketball victory against visiting Bureau Valley on Thursday night.

The Fillies trailed 33-32 when the final quarter began but outscored the Storm 16-5. Chelsea Eads scored six of her 10 points in the period, but she had plenty of help in the comeback. Ashley Greul scored all four of her points in the quarter, and Lakin Goodman (16 points), Emma Melton (9) and Alyssa Canales added two points apiece.

Rams clip Cardinals

PORT BYRON, Ill. — Erie’s Rachel Cobert recorded a double-double, but it wasn’t enough as host Riverdale edged the Cardinals 40-39 in the Three Rivers Conference.

“The difference in the game was free-throw shooting,” Erie coach Brian Howell said. “They made theirs (11-for-18); we missed a lot (7-for-16). In close games, we need to find a way to finish games at the line.”

Cobert finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and her sister, Courtney, also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Riverdale’s Sydney Mericle led all scorers with 28 points.

Prophets win

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Clare Kramer scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the opening quarter to lead Prophetstown to a 42-19 win against Amboy in a matchup of teams that entered the contest unbeaten in the Three Rivers Conference.

Prophetstown led 9-5 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 20-12 at the half as Karlie Stafford scored six points in the second quarter.
