Boys basketball: Free throws send North Cedar past Camanche

Area roundup

CAMANCHE — North Cedar hit some key free throws late, defeating Camanche 59-44 in River Valley Conference boys basketball Friday.

It also helped that the Knights outscored the Indians 13-3 in the first quarter.

Camanche picked things up in the second quarter, scoring 18 to make the deficit 13, but that’s the closest it got.

Free throws were the main difference, with the Knights shooting 17-for-28 while the Indians didn’t visit the line as often, shooting just 10 and making five.

Easton Valley rolls

PRESTON — Easton Valley broke open the game in the second quarter en route to a 75-40 win against visiting North Linn on Friday in Tri-Rivers Conference boys basketball.

The River Hawks (3-0) trailed 12-11 with a minute left in the first quarter but outscored the Lynx 4-0 to finish twhe frame. They then outscored North Linn 21-7 in the second quarter to take control. Zaruba had 12 points at the half, while Craiton Andresen added eight of his 13 before intermission.

Mustangs top Prophets

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Scott Ferry opened the second half with a 3-point basket to help Morrison earn a 39-36, come-from-behind victory against Prophetstown of Friday in Three Rivers Conference boys basketball.

The Prophets led 15-14 at the half, but Ferry scored seven in the third quarter to help the Mustangs build a 26-21 lead. He added five more in the fourth quarter and finished with a team-high 16 points.

Ethan Howard, coming back from a knee injury that ended his football season in the first round of the Illinois playoffs, led Prophetstown with 18 points. He scored 10 of them in the fourth quarter.

Cascade clubs Comets

BELLEVUE — Devin Green and Haris Takes combined for 26 first-half points as they led Cascade to a 72-32 victory against Bellevue in River Valley Conference boys basketball Friday.

Green scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, while Takes added 12 of his 17, including a pair of 3-pointers. Ries Rausch added 15 for Cascade (3-0), with 12 coming from beyond the 3-point arc.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
