Boys basketball: Barber, Dail help Steamers outlast Unity Christian

MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Big fourth quarters by Zach Barber and Matt Dail helped Fulton pull away from Unity Christian for a 71-58 victory Monday night at the West Carroll Holiday Tournament in boys basketball.

Barber pumped in 26 points, 20 in the second half, and Dail scored 13 of his 19 in the final eight minutes.

The two Fulton schools were locked in a close contest for the first three quarters.

Barber scored six in the first quarter as the Steamers built a 14-8 lead, but Colby Dykstra hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second quarter to rally the Knights to a 24-24 tie at halftime. Dykstra scored eight points in the quarter.

Barber scored nine points in the third quarter, but Unity stayed close and entered the final period trailing by one, 40-39.

Dail joined Barber with a hot hand for Fulton in the fourth quarter. He drained three 3-point field goals, added a two-pointer and a pair of field goals. Barber, meanwhile, scored 11 in the quarter, including a 4-for-4 effort from the free-throw line. The Steamers made 9 of 11 from the line in the final period and went 15-for-19 for the game.

Nolan Willoughby led four Unity players into double-digit scoring with 15 points. Dykstra added 13, while Shawn Hintz and Sean Hansen added 11 each.

Warren beats Erie

SAVANNA, Ill. — Despite going scoreless in the third quarter, Erie trailed by just three points entering the final period against Warren. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Warren outscored them 22-11 for a 49-35 victory.

Kullin Harris and Jason Heller dropped in 3-point baskets early in the fourth quarter to jumpstart the Warriors’ offense, which totaled just five points in the third period.

Kendall Cox finished with 18 points to lead Warren, while Heller added 13. Nich Wildt scored 10 points, including a pair of fourth-quarter treys, to lead Erie.

In other games Monday, Dixon beat Stockton 53-29 and East Dubuque defeated Scales Mound 52-40.
