Girls basketball: Fulton rallies in tournament

PEARL CITY, Ill. — Fulton clamped down on defense in the second half and rallied to defeat Orangeville 45-42 in girls basketball Monday at the Pearl City Holiday Tournament.

“We were down 28-20 at halftime, played a great second half defensively and only allowed five points in the fourth (quarter),” Fulton coach Mike Menchaca said.

Averi Leitzen made four 3-point basketbs and led the Steamers with 16 points. She also had four steals and three assists. Betsy Leonard added a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Kerrigan Enloe chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds.

“A great team effort defensively, as we allowed only 14 points in the second half, and we knocked down our free throws late, going 14-for-19 from the line,” Menchaca said.

The Steamers return to action in the tournament Wednesday night, with a 6:30 game against host Pearl City.

Fillies start strong, win

POLO, Ill. — Lakin Goodman scored six of her team-high 19 points in each of the first two quarters and Ashley Greul added eight of her 11 before intermission to help Morrison on its way to a 64-46 victory against host Polo on Monday at the Polo tournament.

The Fillies outscored Polo 15-8 in the first quarter and led the rest of the way.

Chelsea Eads also finished with 11 for Morrison.

KeeLey Meyer led the Marcos with a game-high 21 points.

Prophets roll to win

POLO, Ill. — Prophetstown spread around the scoring in a 68-25 win against Milledgeville on Monday at the Polo tournament.

Kassi Henrekin and Kaeli Kovarik came off the bench to score 11 points each and lead the Prophets (9-2), while starters Corrie Reiley and Clare Kramer added 10 each.

Six different players scored in the first quarter as the Prophets built a 19-4 lead.
