Boys basketball: Sabers knock off No. 2 Solon

DEWITT — Central DeWitt celebrated its first appearance in the Iowa Class 3A boys basketball rankings by knocking off No. 2 Solon 61-52 on Tuesday in WaMaC Conference action.

The ninth-ranked Sabers outscored Solon 25-16 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Kyle Bauer led Central DeWitt (5-0) with 18 points, while McClain Steffens added 16 and Trevor Green scored 10. Emilio Villagrana led Solon (4-1) with 14.

The Spartans held an 11-5 after the first quarter.

River Hawks roll

PRESTON — Locked in a tight battle for one half, Easton Valley came out scoring in the third quarter and defeated Bellevue 61-47 in non-conference action.

The River Hawks (4-1) led 27-24 at the half but outscored the Comets 23-8 in the third quarter.

Logan Wilhelm (21 points ) and Craiton Andresen (20) led the second-half charge, scoring 10 and 16, respectively after halftime.

Tyler Banowetz led Bellevue (1-4) with 20 points.

Morrison falls short

FORRESTON, Ill. — A slow start was costly for Morrison on Tuesday at the Forreston Holiday Tournament.

The Mustangs were limited to 12 points in the first half, and they couldn’t recover in a 50-47 loss to Pearl City.

Hunter Hamstra scored 17 points and Bill Lee Greul added 10 for Morrison.

The Mustangs will face host Forreston at 6:30 tonight. Forreston lost 57-53 to Rockford Christian Life.

On the championship side of the bracket, Sterling Newman and Freeport Aquin moved into Thursday’s semifinals. Aquin defeated Byron 58-48, while Newman beat River Ridge 66-57.

Prophets win

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Grant Ames and Ethan Howard each scored five points in the decisive third quarter to lead Prophetstown past United 47-35 at the United Christmas Tournament.

The Prophets outscored the host school 12-3 in the third period to expand a one-point halftime lead.

Howard led Prophetstown with 14 points, while Ames finished with 13. Gary Wynne led United with 11.

In the other tournament game Tuesday, Williamsfield beat ROWVA 61-45.

Cougars club Cardinals

MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Eastland won the rematch of last year’s Class 1A Illinois sectional semifinals by beating Erie 52-30 on Tuesday night at the West Carroll Holiday Tournament at the West Carroll Middle School.
