Boys basketball: Morrison to play for 15th

FORRESTON, Ill. — Host Forreston pulled away in the second half and defeated Morrison 42-33 in boys basketball Wednesday at the Forreston Holiday Tournament.

The Mustangs led 10-9 after the first quarter, but the Cardinals outscored them in each of the final three periods. Free-throw shooting was a key. Forreston converted on 16 of 27 attempts, while Morrison went just 3-for-10.

Hunter Hamstra led Morrison with eight points.

The Mustangs will face Orangeville at 5 p.m. today at Forreston Junior High in the 15th-place game. Orangeville lost 55-22 to Lena-Winslow on Wednesday

In Wednesday’s other games, Rockford Christian Life defeated Pearl City 57-53, Byron topped River Ridge 66-34, Pecatonica handed Oregon a 50-43 loss and Milledgeville beat Dakota 63-48 despite a 33-point effort from Dakota’s Brett Benning.

Pecatonica and Byron will meet at 5 p.m. Friday for fifth place at the high school, while Milledgeville and Christian Life will play at that time at the junior high for the consolation title.

The semifinals are scheduled for tonight at the high school. Winnebago and Polo square off at 6:30 p.m., and Sterling Newman and Freeport Aquin meet at 8 p.m. The championship and third-place games are set for Friday night.

The other placing games are today, with Oregon facing River Ridge at 5 p.m. for seventh place, Lena-Winslow taking on Forreston at 6:30 p.m. for 13th place and Dakota meeting Pearl City at 8 p.m. for 11th place.
