Irish lack offense as Lisbon sweeps

CLINTON — Monday night’s baseball doubleheader between Prince of Peace and Lisbon was a slow buildup on offense, but the Lions produced more in each game and came away with an 11-3, 10-0 sweep at Ashford University Field.

Neither team went down in order through the first two innings of the opener, although Lisbon set down the Irish 1-2-3 because of overzealous baserunning by Jeremy Peters as he made the last out of the first inning at third base with the cleanup hitter coming up to bat.

Lisbon got on the board in the third inning, sending up all nine batters in the lineup. The Lions scored three runs in an inning that started with an error at shortstop. Two singles and an RBI groundout later, they were leading, but they did get some help from the Irish pitching, which issued four walks in the inning between starter Seth Moeller and reliever Devin Bly.

“Lisbon is a very good team.” Irish coach Bob Mulholland said. “You gotta give Lisbon the credit; they made the plays, but overall I thought our guys played hard.”

Walks hurt the Irish, whose three pitchers combined to issue 13 base on balls. Three walks in the fourth were coupled with two RBI singles adding to Lisbon’s lead 5-0. The Lions went up 10-0 at the end of the top of the sixth inning and needed only three more outs to win by mercy rule.

Prince of Peace was determined not to let it end early, though.

The Irish lineup finally woke up in the bottom of the sixth. Nic Roth led off with a double to left-center and an error at third allowed him to score and put the Irish on the board. Michael Peters smacked an RBI double and Jon Wiesner followed with an RBI single, but that was where the scoring stopped.
