Irish lack offense as Lisbon sweeps

---- — CLINTON — Monday night’s baseball doubleheader between Prince of Peace and Lisbon was a slow buildup on offense, but the Lions produced more in each game and came away with an 11-3, 10-0 sweep at Ashford University Field.

Neither team went down in order through the first two innings of the opener, although Lisbon set down the Irish 1-2-3 because of overzealous baserunning by Jeremy Peters as he made the last out of the first inning at third base with the cleanup hitter coming up to bat.

Lisbon got on the board in the third inning, sending up all nine batters in the lineup. The Lions scored three runs in an inning that started with an error at shortstop. Two singles and an RBI groundout later, they were leading, but they did get some help from the Irish pitching, which issued four walks in the inning between starter Seth Moeller and reliever Devin Bly.

“Lisbon is a very good team.” Irish coach Bob Mulholland said. “You gotta give Lisbon the credit; they made the plays, but overall I thought our guys played hard.”

Walks hurt the Irish, whose three pitchers combined to issue 13 base on balls. Three walks in the fourth were coupled with two RBI singles adding to Lisbon’s lead 5-0. The Lions went up 10-0 at the end of the top of the sixth inning and needed only three more outs to win by mercy rule.

Prince of Peace was determined not to let it end early, though.

The Irish lineup finally woke up in the bottom of the sixth. Nic Roth led off with a double to left-center and an error at third allowed him to score and put the Irish on the board. Michael Peters smacked an RBI double and Jon Wiesner followed with an RBI single, but that was where the scoring stopped.

“You gotta hit the ball to win,” Mulholland said, a point that was made by both offenses on the night.

Game 2 started out in much more decisive fashion as Lisbon got out to a quick 4-0 lead, batting around in the inning. The big blow came on a two-run single from Ryan Kortemeyer, who himself later scored on a wild pitch. The Lions had as many walks as hits in the four-run inning.

Prince of Peace threatened in the top of the second when Nic Roth hit a towering one-out double to the left-field corner and was moved up 90 feet on a single to left from Andre Drury. That was where the threat ended. Colton Krob got both Moeller and Michael Peters swinging to end the threat. That was the last of the offense for the Irish as they were set down 1-2-3 the rest of the game.

“We just didn’t hit the ball. Anytime you don’t hit the ball you’re not going to win the game. They had good pitchers and that hurt us at the plate,” Mulholland said.

Lisbon (13-2, 4-0 Big East) tacked on a lone run in the second inning and five more in the fourth for the 10-0 lead. The fourth inning was especially painful for the Irish because they issued seven walks while not allowing a hit. The seven walks put the Game 2 total at 11 and the day’s total at 24.

“Sometimes, we just don’t hit the strike zone; if it’s not over the plate they’re not gonna get the call,” Mulholland said. “We have to work on that. We just have to get better at making them swing the bat.”

They will have a few days to work on hitting the strike zone and hitting the ball as their next scheduled contest is Thursday at Midland.
