Prophetstown girls enter own tournament on a roll

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — The last time the Prophetstown girls basketball team was on the court, it was celebrating winning the championship of the Polo Tournament and knocking off the top-ranked team in Illinois Class 2A, Byron.

The Prophets take the court Thursday morning trying to extend their 12-game winning streak and win the title at their home tournament.

“I tell them to remember who we are,” Prophetstown coach Don Robinson said. “We do not have a lot of height. We have to play solid defense, block out and take good shots. When we do those things, we can be pretty good.”

The Prophets (14-1) have been more than pretty good this season. Their only loss came in the third game of the season and was by one point to Oregon, a team the Prophets defeated at the Polo Tournament.

Prophetstown kicks off the tournament against West Carroll at 9 a.m. Thursday. Orion and Proviso East are in the black pool with the hosts and the Thunder, while Kirkland Hiawatha, Riverdale, Spring Valley Hall and Hinckley-Big Rock, the defending champion, are in the orange pool.

“There’s a pretty tough field,” Robinson said. “It’s always a good tournament. Riverdale is very talented. Orion is good. Proviso East is definitely very good and Hinckley-Big Rock is perennially tough. It’s a good field.”

West Carroll plays Orion at 3 p.m. Thursday and Prophets-town finishes the day against Proviso East at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, the Prophets face Orion at 7:30 p.m. and West Carroll tangles with Proviso East at 4:30 p.m.

The Prophets are hoping to continue their stellar run with a berth in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The day kicks off with the seventh-place game at 3 p.m.
