DeWitt dodges Dutch

DES MOINES — Central DeWitt won by two points, and by 80 feet.

The Sabers defeated MOC-Floyd Valley 69-67 in a game that had its ups and downs, but the biggest moment of the game came at the end of the second quarter when Logan Sheppard — a player who doesn’t get many shots — sank the deepest shot of the game.

As the horn was sounding, Sheppard heaved the ball from MOC-Floyd Valley’s free-throw line all the way across the court hoping he’d get close. A kiss off the center of the glass helped the ball sink through the basket, and DeWitt went to the locker room trailing by one instead of four.

Sheppard entered the game shooting 0-for-4 on the season from the 3-point area, but his near-impossible 3-pointer helped energize the Sabers in the second half.

“I don’t really know how it happened, but I just got the ball and threw it in,” Sheppard said. “I didn’t know what happened; I was in shock. It was surprising.

“I’m like, wow, I can’t believe that went in,” Sheppard said. “I think that gave us the energy to come out in the second half to take the lead, and hold it.”

DeWitt had a strong lead in the first quarter that grew to 17-4 at its apex. The Sabers shot 70 percent in the first quarter, and guard Kyle Bauer scored the first eight points of the game for DeWitt. Christian Wright, who scored 22 points last Monday night in the substate final, hit a 3-pointer in the run.

MOC-FV started the game in man-to-man defense, and after allowing 17 points to the Sabers, it figured switching to a zone defense might slow down DeWitt. The Sabers didn’t score for 2 1/2 minutes; Bauer broke it up with a layup along the baseline.
