Oberman, Brainerd third-team All-State

CLINTON — There was nothing Addie Oberman couldn’t do for the Northeast girls basketball team. But coach Charles Jargo said one of the most important parts of her game didn’t have anything to do with scoring, rebounding or passing.

“Addie has been real good all three years, but she took on more of a leadership role this year,” Jargo said. “It’s typical that as you grow older you take on more of those roles, and playing with some younger girls, we needed that.”

Oberman, a 5-foot-11 senior at Northeast, was rewarded for her outstanding senior season by being named to the Iowa Newspaper Association All-State third team in the Class 3A backcourt today. She was one of two area players honored on the teams that included 24 girls from each of the five classes. Central DeWitt’s Amanda Brainerd received third-team frontline honors in Class 4A.

“She deserves all-state recognition; I’m happy she could get it,” Jargo said of his standout player.

Oberman led the Rebels with 420 points (17.9 a game) and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career early in the season. She shot 40.5 percent from the field, 72.6 percent from the free-throw line and made 21 3-point field goals. She averaged a team-high 7 rebounds a game and also had team highs in assists (102) and steals (81).

“She didn’t have as good of a 3-point year as we would have liked, but she came through in other areas,” Jargo said.

The Rebels finished the season with a 17-7 record.

Brainerd, a 6-foot sophomore, averaged 16.1 points a game to lead Central DeWitt (12-11). She shot 51.3 percent from the field and 75.2 percent from the free-throw line. She also was the team’s top rebounder at 6.5 a game.

Alexis Conaway of MOC-Floyd Valley was named “Miss Basketball” in Iowa by the media members who voted for the all-state teams. She led her team to the Class 3A state championship, scoring a single-game record 46 points in a semifinal win against Mediapolis. She averaged 21.7 points and 8.4 rebounds a game and had 111 assists, 120 steals and 71 blocked shots on the season.
