Queens nab 5 victories

Her butterfly time was 1:11.15, 2.41 seconds faster than Central’s Emily Delleman.

“We were tied until the white marker on the last lap,” Erling said. “I used to swim with her sister, so that was kind of cool.”

She also was pleased with teammate Molly Anderson’s third-place performance (1:23.82) in the event.

“Molly’s time dropped, and she was happy about that, so we’re still improving,” Erling said.

Erling also got the River Queens out in front in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, but a strong anchor leg by Meredith Cox (59.95 seconds) allowed the Blue Devils to overtake Clinton in the race.

Nickles earned her wins in the distance races, claiming first in the 200 freestyle in 2:22.40 and the 500 freestyle in 6:13.70. Neither race was close.

Hess won the 100 backstroke by almost 5 seconds, in 1:08.01, and she was just edged by Cox in a tight battle in the 100 freestyle. Cox won in 59.17, with Hess second (59.44) and Central’s Emmy Marker third (59.69).

Assistant coach Madella Smith said it was good for the Queens to have a competitive dual after a lopsided loss to a tough Pleasant Valley team last week.

“It’s fun to be competitive and go against a team like them,” Smith said. “I think the girls like it to be more competitive. I think it’s definitely a confidence builder, especially when (races) are going down to the last touch.”
