Prep football: Beckman rolls over Northeast

DYERSVILLE — Coming off back-to-back 42-7 victories, Dyersville Beckman equaled that combined scoring output Friday as it ran its winning streak to five games with an 84-20 win against Northeast in Class 2A District 4 high school football.

The Trailblazers (6-2, 4-1 district) had three long returns for touchdowns. Grant Hammann brought a kickoff back 88 yards for a score, while Mitch Steger matched that distance with an interception return and Tyler Hirsch brought another interception back 37 yards.

Hammann had a big night on offense, too. He rushed for 100 yards on seven carries, three of them for touchdowns, and completed 4 of 5 passes for 104 yards. Hirsch added 96 yards on the ground for Beckman, which ran for 526 yards on 42 attempts.

The Blazers have scored more than 40 points in five of their six wins and have been held below 29 points in just one of their eight games.

No information from Northeast (1-7, 1-4) was submitted.

Camanche falls

MOUNT VERNON — Mitch McElroy threw a pair of touchdown passes Friday in Camanche’s 53-12 loss to Mount Vernon in Class 2A District 4 football.

McElroy connected with Derek Harksen for a 72-yard touchdown toss and combined with Brady Beal for a 25-yard scoring play for the Indians (1-7), who wound up winless in six district games.

McElroy completed 10 of 25 passes for 190 yards but threw five interceptions. Mount Vernon limited the Indians to minus-18 yards rushing.

Mike Morris was the tackles leader for Camanche with seven solos and two assists. Layne Dean added six, all solos.

CHS sophomores fall

RIVERDALE — Coach Mike Griswold was pleased with the performance despite Clinton’s 28-14 loss to Pleasant Valley in sophomore football Friday.

“Tonight was probably our best game of the year,” Griswold said. “We came out ready to play and took advantage of some early PV turnovers. Our defense was very good all night, just giving up a few big plays that would end up putting us in too deep of a hole to dig ourselves out of.”
