Spartans, Bulldogs rule pool

CLINTON -- Forty qualifiers will represent the Clinton High regional swim meet next week at Washington High School for the Iowa Girls State competition. As for the hosting River Queens, not one.

Pleasant Valley won Saturday’s meet with 18 qualifiers, scoring 502 points. The Spartans edged second place Bettendorf, which scored 487 points, but the Bulldogs will also send five top-three times to next week’s competition. Both teams tied with five event wins at the regional. Davenport West was third at 292 points behind top swimmer Vy Ho, an individual qualifier in four races.

Clinton finished in seventh place out of nine teams with 102 points, three points behind sixth place Davenport North. The River Queens’ top finisher was Rebecca Hess, who finished fifth out of 20 swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke. Her time of 1:05.31 was 4.5 seconds off regional winner Claire Straetker of Davenport West and 3 seconds shy of qualifying for state.

The Spartans also dominated the relay events by placing first or second in all three races. They won the 1600-yard freestyle relay by nearly 8 seconds with a time of 3:37.63 and also opened the meet by just edging the Bulldogs in the 800-yard medley relay -- 1:48.21 to 1:48.70.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, won by Bettendorf, Clinton’s Nikki Erling, Hess, Maddie Marlowe and Sadie Nickles placed seventh with a time of 1:52.99. In the final race of the day, the 1600-relay, the same River Queens combo placed fifth with a time of 4:11.48.
