Camanche dominates in the doubles

DAVENPORT -- Camanche showed its strength in doubles Saturday by claiming the top two spots at the Davenport Assumption Invitational girls tennis meet. The 1-2 finish led the Indians to the team title.

Top seeds Kylie Vogel and Lindsey Grams, the 2013 Class 1A state runners-up, defeated teammates Brett Hilgendorf and Page Edens 6-0, 6-1 in the championship match.

“It was nice to see Kylie and Lindsey playing Brett and Page in the finals,” Camanche coach Erin Montgomery said. “Brett and Page fought back after a first set loss, 1-6, in the semis to win in a third-set tiebreaker. They could have easily given up after the first set, but they changed their game and got the job done.”

Hilgendorf and Edens won the final two games of the second set for a 6-3 victory against the second seeds from Davenport Assumption. Then, the Camanche duo scored the first seven points in the tiebreaker en route to the 10-5 win.

In singles, Camanche’s Alexa Devries placed sixth and Kylie Phillips took ninth.

“I was very pleased with how well all the girls played today,” Montgomery said. “Alexa Devries played excellent tennis today. I’m looking forward to seeing her continue to improve.”

Defending Class 1A state champion Haley Resnick of Assumption beat teammate Jamie White 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

Queens win twice

IOWA CITY -- Clinton used its depth to its advantage Saturday as the River Queens beat Iowa City West 8-1 and Iowa City High 6-3 in girls tennis.

The River Queens won all but one singles match against the Women of Troy. Included in the wins was a repeat from last year’s state meet, with Clinton’s Griffin Rasche again beating Megan Jans.

In the other dual, defending Class 2A state runner-up Eve Small and Innes Hiczamas gave City High wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Small Hiczamas also won in doubles, but Clinton got singles wins from Samantha Brisch, Gabby Haan, Shannon Shovlain and Riley Hubbert in both singles and doubles to earn the victory.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
