Panthers take 2 from Byron

---- — BYRON, Ill. — Erie/Prophetstown posted a total of 16 runs Saturday in its softball doubleheader sweep against Byron. The Panthers won the first game 5-1, then followed up by taking the second game 11-6.

Kylie Ackerman threw all seven innings in Game 1 for E/P, allowing four hits and an unearned run. Michaela Spanbauer scored in the second inning off a throwing error.

Ackerman did not allow a walk and struck out 11 hitters. Ackerman threw 102 pitches and 75 were strikes. She also threw 18 first-pitch strikes to the 28 Bobcat hitters.

Meanwhile, the Panthers used the seventh inning as their big inning by scoring four runs. All four runs came off hits, including an RBI double from Kaeli Kovarik.

Savannah Mettler started things off in Game 2 with a first-inning RBI double that brought in Stephanie Thulen, who also hit a double in the No. 2 spot.

The next three innings for the Panthers were quiet. Then, in the fourth inning, Ashley Davis had an RBI triple that started a three-run inning. Davis also scored on the play on a throwing error.

Alicia Stout got one of her three RBIs on a single to center field and advanced to second base. Kali Schroeder scored on the play.

Erie/Prophetstown scored five runs in the fifth inning. Mettler led off the rally with a lead-off double.

Ackerman put the cherry on top in the sixth with a solo home run on the second pitch. It was her lone extra-base hit of the game and only RBI she had.

Mettler got the start in the pitchers circle for the Panthers. In her four-inning appearance, she allowed six runs (one was earned) on six hits. She did not walk a hitter, and also struck out four.

Mettler found the most trouble in the third inning where she allowed three straight singles to the 1-2-3 Bobcats hitters. All three of those hitters scored.

Mettler threw 49 strikes, and got seven first pitch strikes.

Ackerman threw three innings and allowed two hits without allowing a run. The Panthers ace also struck out a Byron hitter. Ackerman faced 11 Bobcats and threw nine first-pitch strikes; she threw 32 pitches (22 strikes).
